Word.Sound.Life.

The Urban Griot Collaborative parses a corpus of audio recordings in order to generate a name repository, geographical map and social network illustrating relationships between authors, stories and communities. As a sharing platform, the system follows after the African proverb that it takes a village to raise a child, resulting in a virtual story-land for youth (and elders in their lives) to develop an important literacy skill: the ability to voice history.

A web-based listening system, Urban Griot serves as an effective concept and context for the shared authoring and swapping of oral histories. Our initial needs and usability studies found that literacy experiences of youth can be enhanced by a social network to publish narratives in collaboration with peers.
